Honoring A Hellenic Legend: Nikos Kazantzakis

 Nikos Kazantzakis

Today is the birthday of a very famous Cretan author and Philosopher, Nikos Kazantzakis!

Most people know Kazantzakis best for his book, Zorba the Greek. I love this work because it is basically about the mentors we encounter in life, and about maintaining a positive outlook for ourselves and others, regardless of our personal circumstances. I recommend you explore the rest of his work if you have the opportunity. He had a great gift for showing us the beauty embedded in every crux of our life paths, the reasons for embracing the great moments, the pragmatic sense of letting things go. His poet’s heart loved so deeply and inspired so many….

To celebrate the occasion, we ask you to take a moment to look at Kazantzakis’ biography, and that you stand tall, let go, and dance one round in his honor, compliments of Mikis Theodorakis.

Unity & Action: Celebrating an American Legend

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday that reminds us to embrace a life of service, solidarity and equality for all. Dr. King, who is celebrated as a heroic American leader, reminds us to fight our challenges with hope and to greet hatred with love.
Whatever you do, you must do it with faith, courage and conviction. You only fail if you give up the fight. These principles precede this great leader and they certainly do not end with him. Today they are celebrated everywhere. It is up to us to carry on the torch, for ourselves and for those around us, leading by example.
“They took your life, they could not take your pride.” (U2, Pride, Unforgettable Fire)
Below are 12 memorable MLK quotes. Which is your favorite?
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
“Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude.”
“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.”
“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.”
“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.”
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
“Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness.”
“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
Make it a great day. The choice is yours.
